Fisheries expert Alfred Jones is leading a life of quiet frustration.
At home, his career-driven wife ignores him, at work,
he has a slave driver for a boss. His life takes a dramatic
turn when a wealthy sheik, with an obsession for
fly-fishing, gets in touch with British experts to realise
his dream - introducing salmon to the periodically dry
riverbeds of Yemen. The British government has an
urgent need to create a new and positive image
of the country’s involvement in the Middle East,
and the prime minister’s spokeswoman Patricia
Maxwell soon becomes enthused by the
salmon idea. She appoints Alfred as
head of the project. Alfred, himself, is finally
persuaded by the charismatic sheik - and he
also develops an interest in the sheik’s representative,
Harriet. He decides to ignore his deep-held doubts
and accept the sheik’s challenge, a decision
which is to change life as he knows it.

– att plantera in lax i Jemens tidvis uttorkade flodbäddar.
Den brittiska regeringen är i akut behov av en ny och positiv
bild av Storbritanniens engagemang i Mellanöstern och
premiärministerns taleskvinna Patricia Maxwell nappar snart
på idén om laxfisket och utser Alfred till ansvarig för projektet.
Alfred själv låter sig till sist övertygas av den karismatiske shejken
– och han börjar även intressera sig för shejkens representant
Harriet. Han bestämmer sig för att bortse från sin djupt rotade
cynism och antar shejkens utmaning, en utmaning som
kommer att förändra hela hans tillvaro.
